Frida Kahlo’s appearance was a political and social statement – she crafted her identity to reflect her own mixed-race heritage and allegiance to Mexico. Her wardrobe compromised examples of traditional Mexican dress - like this embroidered huipil (blouse), enagua (skirt) with the holanes lace flounce. She chose to dress almost exclusively in the traditional dress of Tehuana people, from which her mother descended, because they honored and revered womanhood. “Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up” is on display @vamuseum through November 4th.
